In The Blink Of An Eye

_I wrote this as a tribute to my mother who was taken from 17 years ago on the 12th of September.

It really doesn’t pay
To take life for granted every day
Because it can all be taken away
In the blink of an eye.

Life seems to just drift along
Like a never ending song
Until someone dear to you is gone
In the blink of an eye.

Time heals all wounds, they say
The pain will lessen every day
When someone you love is taken away
In the blink of an eye.

As time passes, less often you will cry
The pain dulls to a heavy sigh
As the years fly by
In the blink of an eye.

Life goes on day by day
Until one day you wake up and say
“The years have flown away”
In the blink of an eye.

Mum, I don’t know how to say
I think about you every day
I can’t believe how the years have flown away
In the blink of an eye!

So today’s my birthday.  Occasions like this are always cause for celebration.  I’ve survived another year on the madness that is planet earth.  But when you lose a loved one, that celebration is always tinged with sadness.  It becomes bittersweet.

I lost my mum on the 12th September 1997.  She had leukemia.  We didn’t even know she had it until the day she passed.  On the Thursday she was taken ill and rushed to hospital.  Friday morning we got a call from the hospital that she had leukemia and she was transferred to a cancer hospital in London.  She passed away that evening at around eight o’clock.

Just like that.

It’s always hard to accept.  Especially when it happens so fast.  Now she,s been gone 16 years.  I don’t know where the time went.  But I will never forget her.  Or my dad, who died when I was just 14.  Celebrations will always be celebrated, but with that tinge of sadness.
